“Chiefs of staff are often described as ‘the ultimate generalists’: typically highly flexible, comfortable with ambiguity, and able to build trust quickly. These are skills that are well developed in the military, and are invaluable in leadership, advisory and operational roles in both the commercial and not-for-profit sectors.
The challenge is helping individuals going through that transition. Personal development is fundamental.”
The CSA Military Membership is open to serving AUKUS uniformed and defence civilian personnel, both Regular and Reserve, who hold Field Rank (NATO OF3–OF5). Senior Enlisted / Senior Warrant Officers (NATO OR8/OR9) may also be considered based on their roles and experience. We are looking to roll this out to the wider international military community in the near future.
Applicants from all services and branches are encouraged to apply, provided they meet the rank and experience requirements. We welcome applicants who are currently serving in chief of staff roles and those who expect a chief of staff role as their next assignment.”
The programme is also open to active service personnel from other countries on a case-by-case basis, depending on rank, experience, and suitability.
A successful UK applicant will likely have held responsible posts in operational planning teams, large headquarters, international posts, have significant expertise in a specific field or, conversely, notable breadth in their portfolio. Motivation, commitment to developing other leaders, and a demonstrable capacity to think strategically are key factors in the selection process.
Successful US applicants may serve as chiefs of staff or hold field-grade officer roles such as executive officer, staff secretary, or aide-de-camp, demonstrating potential for chief of staff positions. Senior enlisted members who have direct access to and influence with commanders and senior staff are also encouraged to apply. This opportunity is open to the Total Force, including reserve members who possess rich military and civilian experiences related to the duties and responsibilities of a chief of staff.
“Attending the inaugural Chief of Staff Association’s Oxford course was a transformative experience. The invaluable networking opportunities allowed me to connect with peers and recognise the vast chief of staff experience I had gained in my military service.
The camaraderie formed during the week led to lasting friendships and support as I navigated my transition to civilian roles after leaving the RAF in 2023. I am grateful for the opportunities the Association provides to military leavers and encourage all service leaders to explore the potential within its network.”
